Below is an example of a video lesson. Music Mixed functions as a flipped classroom. This means that content is often learned at home by the student via the use of video, allowing class time to be utilized for hands-on application as well as content discussions--all while supervised and supplemented by the teacher.
Here is an overview of our lesson plans.
Unit 1- Introduction. Students will identify their favorite style of music along with explanations of why they enjoy said style the most. Students will create a presentation to show to the rest of class. - Here students are analyzing music on the most basic level with accuracy, as well as establishing the foundation in which other styles will be compared with understanding.
Unit 2 - Necessary skills. Students will use their books, their online resource, my presentations, and any outside information they initiate individually to learn the basic necessary skills necessary for simple music composition and analysis such as tonalities, rhythmic systems, form, instrumentation, etc . . . Students will then apply this knowledge to learn about and identify what occurs in their favorite style of music - Here students are gaining musical knowledge that will aid in their mission of more deeply analyzing music with accuracy as well aiding in completing their final project of an original composition with deep understanding.
Unit 3 - Dependent Identifying. Each student will be provided with songs of my choosing where there exist similarities between their favorite styles and the new styles. They will learn by individual instruction how to identify the correlations. - Here students are learning to apply their understanding of acquired musical knowledge with accuracy.
Unit 4 - Independent Identifying. Each student will be responsible for finding new music of different styles in which similarities to their own favorite exist. It will be the students responsibility to show me the similarities and explain why they are similar. - Here students are learning on a more analytical and independent level. They will be successfully independently finding and creating correlations with a deep understanding.
Unit 5 - Composition/Final Project. Here students will be given further knowledge on musical composition as well as gain familiarity with the programs they will be using to create music. They will have the responsibility of creating an original composition in the style of their favorite music, however music have elements of at least two new styles present. - Here students are applying all accumulated knowledge of both composition as well as stylistic tendencies in order to produce an original piece of music in their favorite style which contains elements of two new styles with accuracy.
